The threading path on an Underwood goes: left spool → over the typebar area → under the vibrator arm → through a secondary guide → onto the right spool. The spool hubs on older models use a crimped or hooked attachment point; make sure the ribbon end is properly anchored before you start threading or the whole thing will unspool the moment you advance it.

Tension is critical on Underwoods. The ribbon needs to be taut enough that it doesn’t sag between the guide points, but not so tight that it resists the advance mechanism. An over-tightened Underwood ribbon will either shred at the hub or cause the advance pawl to slip. Olivetti (Lettera 32, Valentine)

Troubleshooting Common Ribbon Problems

Ribbon Not Advancing

The ribbon advances one click per keystroke via a small mechanism called the advance pawl (sometimes called the “dog” — yes, really). When the advance stops working, the pawl usually isn’t catching the spool teeth properly.
